a bang — and this time they’re here to stay Their first album Yeh Bhi Woh Bhi caused a stir among the youthful Indian population when it was released in 2002; and Sudhanshu Pandey Sherrin Varghese Karan Oberoi and Chintoo Bhosle the ‘boys’ from the pop band immediately shot to pin-up poster fame with their exuberance and catchy tunes Though the band didn’t quite perform as regularly in 2007 the tongue-in-cheek and catchy song ‘The Ungli Song’ with singer Shibani Kashyap for the Ungli campaign around voting made waves — both musically and sociopolitically Two years later the boys — we may Even after 33 years of him passing away sometimes I weep not just because I miss him but because of a deep sense of longing In 1982 we were in Bombay (now Mumbai) and dad was in the Himalayas working on a project when we got the numbing news of him passing away The minute I was told I impulsively ran to his cupboard and hugged his clothes and wept they smelt of him It hit me then and I said it out loudly in a way to him that I am going to be a photographer A lot of his work is lost Unfortunately the archive that I knew existed has been misplaced That’s a guilt I wake up to every day That’s why this show is fractional redemption I am still trying to retrace the archives and his cameras His golden years of revolutionising Indian photojournalism were with the Hindustan Times in the ’60s He started the concept of the byline and full-page essays I think it was also propelled by his academic studies in the US and prevalent contemporary global practices He quit his job in 1967 but in those few years his poignant photos had covered the Nehru era the Bihar famine and the wars of 1962 and 1965 His last picture of Lal Bahadur Shastri half an hour before Shastri passed away in Tashkent was picked up by every agency in the world His powerful visual aesthetic was driven by ‘being there first getting it out fast’ Kishor Parekh His iconic work ‘Bangladesh: A Brutal Birth’ is being exhibited in India for the first time 33 years after he passed away I remember we used to live in Hong Kong then; I was five We would come to the beach on weekends where dad would occasionally paint That day he was very uneasy and said ‘My country is burning and here I am doing this’ He didn’t let emotions for his four kids and wife weigh him down At that time he was the editor of three magazines and none of them were news so the project was self-assigned and self-funded He landed in Bombay went to a friend in Calcutta and persuaded him to drivehim to the border They reached a spot where no civilians could cross the border There he spotted an army helicopter leaving for Dhaka carrying an official press troupe but since he didn’t have the mandatory clearances the accompanying army Major refused him permission That’s when he famously said ‘Shoot me here right now or take me’ He landed in the warzone befriended themukti-bahini (freedom fighters) there who gave him a jeep for travelling Once there he shot for five days —December 16was the surrender he stuck around for an extra day or two and that’s when the other pictures happened He came back to Hong Kong immediately processed the pictures and contact sheets were made in a few days My mother said that after returning from Bangladesh he didn’t come home but went to the studio straightaway He lost alot of weight in those days because he couldn’t eat He said all he could smell was rotten flesh Returning quickly with a dummy of the photo book to India he met officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and they ordered 20000 copies in English and French So in two weeks everything happened and by January the book was out The family only has two copies one is here at the exhibit I don’t know where all the copies are I presume some of them were destroyed Obviously it can be republished now but I want to do full justice as his son and as a photographer too In the book all the captions are written by him they are very poetic and in first person — for instance lines like ‘people wept as silently as the dead’ Swapan Parekh Why has it taken you so long to exhibit your father’s work in India I don’t know why My strength and weakness is that if I do something I have to do it right Sometimes the time isn’t right sometimes the venue and sometimes the gallerist and I are not on the same emotional platform At the Delhi Photo Festival it’s the right people When Prashant (Panjiar) called me about exhibiting his work I just said yes How has he influenced your work The sanctity of the negatives black-and-white working in the dark room – all of that comes from him In my advertising career also I would shoot and process my own film and prints I feel I have reached a point now where I can call my pictures my own The exhibition is on till November 8 as part of the Delhi Photo Festival at IGNCA Janpath For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Related NewsWritten by BollywoodHungamaNewsNetwork | Mumbai | any man fall for her Aarti Chabria speaks on her love for moviesDus Tola and her aspirations: Dus Tola isn’t a huge starrer but it got critical acclaim Dus Tola is a film to doubt the most out of all the releases all the releases of last Friday All the films released are of different genres Although I’ve always been an ardent fan of Ram Gopal Varma and I’ve worked with VivekRakht Charitra is a very gory film with lots of bloodshed A film like RC isn’t for all types of audiences Jhootha Hi Sahi too hasn’t had a good opening and Hisss too has fallen prey But Dus Tola has got the critical acclaim that we were so longing for Yeswe too never expected a large opening because it isn’t a huge starrer Dus Tola is a word of mouth film and can be termed as a ‘khara sona’ (true diamond) I’ve waited for the solo film where it’s just the hero and I and Dus Tola gave me that Most of what I’ve done till now have been glamorous roles and being a part of multi-starrers But I’ve really waited for the solo film where it’s just the hero and me Dus Tola gave me that opportunity It doesn’t matter how the film is doing but what matters is the appreciation coming my way which I’m happy about Dus Tola should do the rounds of the various festivals I think Dus Tola is a kind of film that should go to the festivals That is completely a call that the producer and the director have to take As much as I want it and Manoj Bajpayee wants it or we all want itI don’t know whether it’ll go to the extent of being a part of the many festivals around the globe I’ve never been a part of any controversy my ability and passion for acting or else I would’ve got married and happily settled in life like everybody else has Manoj Bajpayee isn’t about a hit or a flop He is about what we call ‘performance’ I’ve worked with Mr BachchanGovindaAkshay Kumar and Vivek Oberoi But Manoj Bajpayee falls into a different league of actors He isn’t a super star He is just a good actor I’ve always looked up to him as an actor since his Satya days to Raajneeti Even his films which haven’t done well at the Box Office like Acid Factory or Jailhe really stood his own Manoj Bajpayee isn’t in the industry because of his hitsbecause a hit or a flop doesn’t matter to his career as much as his performances matter There is Naseeruddin ShahParesh RawalNana Patekar and then there is Manoj Bajpayee I’m proud today to have got a chance to work with an actor like Manoj Directors get so influenced by external forces to alter their story but not Ajoy This is Ajoy’s first film He is my Shyam Benegal right now I have to work with people who give me opportunities and Ajoy got the best out of me so far in my long ongoing career I want to work with him again He kept his stand and what’s good is that what he narrated to me and what we saw at the premiere night was the same He didn’t fiddle too much with the story Directors get so influenced by external forces to alter their story but not Ajoy That’s why I respect him I am very superstitious I have two films that I have promised my time to I am so superstitious that I don’t want to disclose anything beyond this There was a time when I started to shoot films but mid way or even before thatthe films got shelved I’ll talk about my films once they are nearer completion All that shines is not Gold It is a loss if the audiences haven’t watched Dus Tola on the big screen In times when films like Dev DUdaanTere Bin Ladenetc are working wellDus Tola falls under the same category The next best thing for the audiences who’ve not seen the film can catch it on the DVD Dus Tola isn’t senseless It’s got a beautiful moral Its humour filled in bits and places and intelligent Dus Tola isn’t about cheap comedy and stupid jokes Dus Tola is unique in its comic genre and drama because it shines and how… and is truly priceless I’d love to work with Raju Hirani and Anurag Kashyap I am great fan of Raj Kumar Hirani and would love to work with him someday I believe So the 26 roles that are at risk have been urged to apply for the over 100 new roles that have been created.”The statement comes after Kindred in April reported a year-on-year decline in earnings in the first quarter, despite a rise in revenue.Revenue for the three months through to March 31, 2019 amounted to £224.4m (€250.3m/$284.4m), up 8.0% on the previous year, but earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation fell 35.3% to £30.6m, with Kindred noting it had taken an £18.9m hit from its Swedish launch. At the time, Kindred also reported a 29.2% rise in marketing costs to £53.6m, due in part to higher expenditure on bonuses, and strong uptake in Sweden in January and February. However, bonus spend stabilised later in the quarter, and was lower than 2018 by March.Image: Max Pixel Tags: Online Gamblinglast_img
