Revealed: Oxford Councillor’s controversial social media posts

first_imgThis included the message that once Gaddafi was dead the Libyan people “will pay the price because you will suffer”.The post then lists 16 positive aspects of Gaddafi’s rule. The final lines read: “If this is called “dictatorship”, I wonder what type of leadership Democrats have!! Share this to remember gaddafi.”Nowhere are Gaddafi’s human rights abuses or financing of international terror mentioned. When asked in a comment whether Gaddafi was a socialist, Lloyd-Shogbesan replied: “Even the socialists didn’t do as much as Gaddafi did for Libya. The West wanted him out of the way so they can get at the oil.”A post praising Libyan despot Muammar Gaddafi, which Lloyd-Shogbesan shared. In a March 2016 status, Lloyd-Shogbesan related an “interesting prayer”. The post opens with the words “SAME SEX MARRIAGE”, and later includes the lines “We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle”, and “We have killed the unborn and called it choice”. It ends with a plea that the prayer “sweep over our nation and WHOLEHEARTEDLY become our desire”.Also in 2016, he said: “cancer is not a disease but business.” The post continued “cancer consists of only a deficiency of vitamin B17. It is nothing else. Avoid chemotherapy, surgery, or taking medicines with strong side effects”.Lloyd-Shogbesan said: “I am committed to fighting all forms of racism and discrimination including anti-semitism and homophobia.“And I will use the opportunity given to me by my re-election last week to the Oxford City Council to do so and help create a society where we can discuss strongly held views in a tolerant and mutually respectful way.”The revelations will raise questions about how Lloyd-Shogbesan could have remained an elected representative of the Labour Party for so long despite openly professing antisemitic and conspiratorial views.Councillor Susan Brown, leader of the Labour Group on Oxford City Council, told Cherwell: “This matter came to my attention late last week. These posts are extremely disappointing and I asked Cllr Lloyd-Shogbesan to remove them immediately from his social media account. He has done so and he has apologized for his actions.“As Labour Councillors, we came into politics to tackle prejudice, injustice and to celebrate diversity so we take these issues extremely seriously.“Anti-Semitism or any form of discrimination has absolutely no place in the Party, and we are committed to challenging and campaigning against it all its forms.” Campaigners against anti-semitism have called for the immediate suspension of an Oxford Labour councillor following revelations that he compared Israel to Nazi Germany. He has also praised Gaddafi, alluded to same sex marriages as “perversion”, and spread a conspiracy theory that cancer does not exist, Cherwell can exclusively reveal.Ben Lloyd-Shogbesan, councillor for Lye Valley ward since 2010, has now been referred by Oxford Labour to the national party. In a statement he apologised for any offence caused by the articles and videos shared by him, and for his implicit endorsement of them. He stressed that he no longer holds such views.Councillor Lloyd-Shogbesan shared a graphic on his now deleted personal Facebook page in 2014 that directly equated the actions of German and Israeli soldiers. Such comparisons are considered antisemitic under the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition, adopted by the UK government in 2016.The Labour councillor shared a photo comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.Euan Philipps, spokesperson for Labour Against Antisemitism, described the image as “apparently antisemitic” and “extremely offensive”. He told Cherwell that it ought to have led to Lloyd-Shogbesan’s “immediate suspension and ultimate expulsion”.“Instead he continued to serve a four-year term as a Labour councillor on Oxford City Council. It is profoundly distressing content like this that we witness and report to the Labour Party every single day.”In March of this year, Lloyd-Shogbesan shared a photo of Muammar Gaddafi’s execution with a caption setting out the Libyan dictator’s “prophecies” for the future of Libya following his death.last_img

Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Ocean City’s Hometown Heroes

first_imgWorld War II veterans Jack Kreider, left, and Joe Caserta shared the honor of laying the wreath at a ceremony in May of 2017. By Donald WittkowskiMemorial Day is a particularly sad time for Joe Caserta, a 95-year-old World War II veteran who fought in Europe while serving as a tank commander with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Armored Division.Caserta, who has lived in Ocean City for 30 years, explained that Memorial Day ceremonies remind him of his fellow soldiers who were killed on the battlefield more than 70 years ago.“It’s very sad,” he said. “I think about all the hard times we had and all the guys we lost who were with us. It was a long time ago, but we never forgot them.”Hundreds of people filled Ocean City’s Veterans Memorial Park on Monday for a somber Memorial Day service that showed that they, too, haven’t forgotten the military men and women who lost their lives while serving their country during different wars. The ceremony drew hundreds of people to Veterans Memorial Park. One of the most poignant moments of the ceremony came when Caserta and fellow World War II veteran Jack Kreider laid a wreath to remember the dead. Standing together, Caserta and Kreider saluted the wreath, a gesture that brought tears to some of the people in the crowd.“I was very proud to help – honored, actually,” Kreider said of his participation in the wreath-laying.Kreider, 92, who has lived in Ocean City since 1986, was stationed in Europe and served as an Army radio operator in an armored car during the war. Kreider said he looks forward to Memorial Day ceremonies each year because they bring the community together for a noble cause. “Just the fact that so many people assemble on this day is something that is deeply appreciated by all of us who have served in the military,” he said.Mayor Jay Gillian, in remarks during the ceremony, paid tribute to the veterans who have connections to Ocean City.“Ocean City residents have always answered the call to duty,” Gillian said, noting that a memorial wall in Veterans Memorial Park lists the names of the city’s hometown heroes.Mayor Jay Gillian paid tribute to all members of the military from Ocean City. The mayor also recognized the contributions of the local veterans organizations, including American Legion Post 524 and VFW Post 6650.“Ocean City has always respected the men and women of our military,” Gillian said.Michael Morrissey, commander of VFW Post 6650, led the crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim Sambucci, of American Legion Post 524, and Clark Manley, of VFW Post 6650, read the names of veterans who are enshrined in Ocean City’s Honor Roll.A silver bell rang out in tribute each time the name of an Honor Roll member was mentioned. Bugler Greg Murphy followed by playing “Taps.”From left, Tom Tumelty, service officer for American Legion Post 524, Korean War and Vietnam veteran Bill Cruice and World War II veterans Jack Kreider and Joe Caserta listened to the singing of “God Bless America.”While delivering the Memorial Day invocation, the Rev. John S. Sheldon, of the First Presbyterian Church, stressed that many Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the country’s basic liberties.“Many boys and young men gave up two lives – the lives they were living and the lives they would have lived,” Sheldon said, recalling a quote from President Ronald Reagan. The ceremony’s keynote speaker was Ocean City native Luke Anthony Walsh, a decorated Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot who flew 90 missions in Afghanistan.Walsh challenged the crowd to spend some time at their local American Legion or VFW posts. He said that would give them an opportunity to learn about the sacrifices that have been made by so many American veterans and to gain a better appreciation of wartime history.“Remember that the fallen are more than numbers on a page,” Walsh said.Keynote speaker Luke Anthony Walsh urged the crowd to visit a local American Legion or VFW post to learn about the sacrifices made by veterans.Conspicuously placed at the front of the Memorial Day ceremony was a small table, draped with a simple white tablecloth and adorned with a red rose. A glass was placed upside down on the table and there was a solitary, empty chair.Steeped in symbolism, the table and other items represented the soldiers who were taken prisoner or went missing in action and never returned home from war.Jack Hagan, adjutant of American Legion Post 524, explained that the white tablecloth symbolized the purity of the soldiers and the red rose represented the blood they may have spilled. The glass was turned upside down because there was no opportunity for those soldiers to enjoy a celebratory post-war toast. The chair remains empty because the soldiers are still missing. But a white candle was also placed on the table, symbolizing the hope that all of the missing soldiers will someday return home.last_img
