It makes me stay connected with my fans and it’s easier to interact with them without affecting my game. The dependability of his late innings overs always being a banker in the bowling department. In response to his unavailability the Lions didn’t adjust their resources accordingly They played with a bowler less Bravo being replaced by a top quality top-order batsman meaning they were a bowler short As it was Raina Karthik and Jadeja all slotted down a place in the order and it was their contributions that got the team to a fairly decent total of 149 But one would have thought that Ishan Kishan batting at number eight and facing only two balls in the final over was surplus to requirements —and could have effectively been substituted for one of the Lions’ decent spin options But maybe Raina fancied that role for himself He is one of those leaders who enjoys turning his arm over Some skippers are reluctant bowlers while others need little persuasion to mark out their run-up My own personal favourite when I was growing up was Middlesex and England’s Mike Gatting He loved the excuse to have an exploratory over or two But as captain of England he could only justify having a go if better bowlers had had done sofirst —and that included my boyhood hero Graham Gooch He was marginally superior to Gatting and everyone knew it Therefore if Gatt was going to get a bowl Goochie would have a chance to swing his arm over first Thus Gooch would get an over before lunch —and Gatting could have a trundle before tea Butit’s still hard to justify Raina bowling a full complement of four overs before either Jadeja or James Faulkner had bowled a single over That really did not make sense It also probably didn’t make much difference —the excellent batting by Daredevils’openers Quinton de Kock and Rishabh Pant essentially sealing the match —but the point stands The Lions need to steady the ship —this has become an all hands to the pumps situation —and if it is premature to talk in terms of the Lions’ vessel beginning to sink it is taking on water Theyneed to find balance —in theircricket and their playingXI On paper they are a strong side when they are fit and when they pick the right combination But right now they are looking tired and jaded It will be a test of the players’ fortitude of Raina’s leadership and the management’s strength to pick the Lions up dust them off and get them quickly back to winning waysBy: IANS | Mumbai | Published: December 1 2015 4:36 region our efforts to advance securityprosperity and human dignity across the Asia-Pacific For the United Statesthis reflects a broader shift After a decade in which we fought two wars that cost us dearlyin blood and treasurethe United States is turning our attention to the vast potential of the Asia Pacific region In just a few weeksafter nearly nine yearsthe last American troops will leave Iraq and our war there will be over In Afghanistanweve begun a transition a responsible transition so Afghans can take responsibility for their future and so coalition forces can begin to draw down And with partners like Australiaweve struck major blows against al-Qaeda and put that terrorist organisation on the path to defeatincluding delivering justice to Osama bin Laden… Our new focus on this region reflects a fundamental truth the United States has beenand always will bea Pacific nation… Herewe see the future As the worlds fastest-growing region and home to more than half the global economy the Asia Pacific is critical to achieving my highest priorityand thats creating jobs and opportunity for the American people With most of the worlds nuclear power and some half of humanityAsia will largely define whether the century ahead will be marked by conflict or cooperationneedless suffering or human progress As presidentI havethereforemade a deliberate and strategic decision as a Pacific nationthe United States will play a larger and long-term role in shaping this region and its futureby upholding core principles and in close partnership with our allies and friends Let me tell you what this means Firstwe seek securitywhich is the foundation of peace and prosperity We stand for an international order in which the rights and responsibilities of all nations and all people are upheld Where international law and norms are enforced Where commerce and freedom of navigation are not impeded Where emerging powers contribute to regional securityand where disagreements are resolved peacefully Thats the future that we seek NowI know that some in this region have wondered about Americas commitment to upholding these principles So let me address this directly As the United States puts our fiscal house in orderwe are reducing our spending Andyesafter a decade of extraordinary growth in our military budgets and as we definitively end the war in Iraqand begin to wind down the war in Afghanistan we will make some reductions in defence spending As we consider the future of our armed forcesweve begun a review that will identify our most important strategic interests and guide our defence priorities and spending over the coming decade So here is what this region must know As we end todays warsI have directed my national security team to make our presence and mission in the Asia Pacific a top priority As a resultreductions in US defence spending will not I repeatwill not come at the expense of the Asia Pacific… Indeedwe are already modernising Americas defence posture across the Asia Pacific It will be more broadly distributed maintaining our strong presence in Japan and the Korean Peninsulawhile enhancing our presence in Southeast Asia Our posture will be more flexible with new capabilities to ensure that our forces can operate freely And our posture will be more sustainableby helping allies and partners build their capacitywith more training and exercises We see our new posture here in Australia The initiatives that the prime minister (Julia Gillard) and I announced (on Wednesday) will bring our two militaries even closer together Well have new opportunities to train with other allies and partnersfrom the Pacific to the Indian Ocean And it will allow us to respond faster to the full range of challengesincluding humanitarian crises and disaster relief… We see Americas enhanced presence in the alliance that weve strengthened: In Japanwhere our alliance remains a cornerstone of regional security In Thailandwhere were partnering for disaster relief In the Philippineswhere were increasing ship visits and training And in South Koreawhere our commitment to the security of the Republic of Korea will never waver Indeedwe also reiterate our resolve to act firmly against any proliferation activities by North Korea The transfer of nuclear materials or material by North Korea to states or non-state entities would be considered a grave threat to the United States and our alliesand we would hold North Korea fully accountable for the consequences of such action We see Americas enhanced presence across Southeast Asia in our partnership with Indonesia against piracy and violent extremismand in our work with Malaysia to prevent proliferation; in the ships well deploy to Singaporeand in our closer cooperation with Vietnam and Cambodia; and in our welcome of India as it looks east and plays a larger role as an Asian power… Meanwhilethe United States will continue our effort to build a cooperative relationship with China All of our nations Australiathe United States all of our nations have a profound interest in the rise of a peaceful and prosperous China Thats why the United States welcomes it Weve seen that China can be a partner from reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula to preventing proliferation And well seek more opportunities for cooperation with Beijingincluding greater communication between our militaries to promote understanding and avoid miscalculation We will do thiseven as we continue to speak candidly to Beijing about the importance of upholding international norms and respecting the universal human rights Photo: Lynette Wilson/Episcopal News Service[Episcopal News Service] Colombia Bishop Francisco Duque is calling for prayer in the aftermath of an Oct. 2 popular vote in which voters narrowly rejected a peace deal that would have ended more than 50 years of armed conflict between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.“We call on the church to pray a lot so that the necessary accord is reached and so that we can all live as brothers,” said Duque. “Let’s achieve a peace that brings justice, reparations and not repetition.”Sunday’s vote defied polls that predicted overwhelming support for the peace accord. With a total of 99.8 percent of all ballots tallied, 50.2 percent of voters rejected the accord, and 49.8 percent voted “yes” for peace.“We’re still in shock. We haven’t processed the results yet. It was a vote based on emotion, opinion. The people who showed up to vote ‘no’ didn’t want to let anyone know their opinion before so they wouldn’t be judged, but when they went to the polls they expressed themselves,” said Duque in an Oct. 3 interview with Episcopal News Service.“Earlier polling projected that more than 60 percent of the population would vote yes, but the reality was very different, and many people didn’t even turn out to vote,” he said.Less than 38 percent of voters went to the polls. The “no vote” put an end to four years of peace talks. The Colombian government and the FARC, the largest guerrilla group in the country, have been negotiating in Havana, Cuba. The referendum wasn’t legally necessary to implement the peace accord negotiated between the government and FARC. However, the president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, thought that a popular vote would lend legitimacy to the accord. On the night of Oct. 2, Santos regretfully recognized the referendum’s outcome. “Today I address the country as president of all Colombians, of both those who voted yes and those who voted no. I called for a referendum. The majority, be it by a very narrow margin, said ‘no.’ I am the first to recognize the result,” he said.Via Twitter on Oct. 2 the FARC wrote: “To the Colombian people who dream of peace, [you can] count on us. Peace will prevail.”In June, the government and the FARC signed a historic ceasefire, which Santos said on Oct. 4 that he would extend until Oct. 31.The guerilla leader, Rodrigo Londoño, alias “Timochenko,” issued a statement confirming the ceasefire from Cuba following the vote’s results. “FARC-EP reiterates its willingness to use only words as weapons for building toward the future,” he wrote.Duque indicated that the reaffirmation of the ceasefire is a hopeful sign.“The people have had doubts about what the FARC will get [after the accord], but all of us want an end to the war. As a church we see our role will be to reconcile brothers with such polarized opinions and to pursue building peace together,” he said.Though, he added, the church recognizes that the way forward will not be easy.Last May, before the ceasefire, the Episcopal Diocese of Colombia agreed at a national convention to support the peace process, offering the government its facilities as “spaces for exercises in reconciliation to succeed in building a sustainable peace.”(The Episcopal Diocese of Colombia is one of seven dioceses that make up the Episcopal Church’s ninth province, which covers Central and South America and the Caribbean.)Colombians most affected by the war voted ‘yes.’ Since the mid-1960s government forces, left-wing guerrillas and right-wing paramilitaries have been fighting a civil war rooted in inequality that has killed more than 220,000 Colombians. Some 6.7 million people are displaced inside Colombia, about 13 percent of the 47 million inhabitants. Another 360,000 refugees have fled abroad, most to Ecuador – which hosts the largest number of refugees in Latin America, and another 170,000 have fled to Venezuela.Churches throughout the Diocese of Colombia have stood with those affected by the conflict. They have provided pastoral care, and humanitarian assistance and shelter to Colombians affected by and internally displaced more than a half-century of armed conflict. The church also has assisted Colombian refugees to rebuild their lives in Ecuador.According to information gathered by the magazine Semana of Colombia, a majority of voters in areas most affected by armed conflict supported the peace accord. In mountainous regions like Chocó, Caquetá, and Nariiño where the presence of war lingers, more than 60 percent of the votes were “yes” votes for peace.Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe led the “no vote,”  saying it was too lenient on the rebels.— Clara Villatoro is a freelance journalist based in El Salvador.
