she staggered a few steps before recovering her balance A barrage of wolf-whistles and lewd remarks issued from a deep chasm in the road full of men in hard hats and fluorescent jackets Shaking long strawberry-blonde hair out of her eyes red in the face she ignored them her thoughts returning irresistibly to Sarah Shadlock and her sly persistent questions about Robins boss "He is strangely attractive isnt he Bit beaten-up-looking but Ive never minded that Is he sexy in the flesh Hes a big guy isnt he" Robin had seen Matthews jaw tightening as she tried to return cool indifferent answers "Is it just the two of you in the office Is it really Nobody else at all" Bitch thought Robin whose habitual good nature had never stretched to Sarah Shadlock She knew exactly what she was doing "Is it true he was decorated in Afghanistan Is it Wow so were talking a war hero too" Robin had tried her hardest to shut down Sarahs one-woman chorus of appreciation for Cormoran Strike but to no avail: a coolness had crept into Matthews manner towards his fiancée by the end of the match His displeasure had not prevented him bantering and laughing with Sarah on the journey back from Vicarage Road though and Tom whom Robin found boring and obtuse had chortled away oblivious to any undercurrents Jostled by passersby also navigating the open trenches in the road Robin finally reached the opposite pavement passing beneath the shadow of the concrete grid-like monolith that was Centre Point and becoming angry all over again as she remembered what Matthew had told her at midnight when the argument had burst back into flame "You cant stop bloody talking about him can you I heard you to Sarah" "I did not start talking about him again it was her you werent listening" But Matthew had imitated her using the generic voice that stood for all women high-pitched and imbecilic: "Oh his hairs so lovely" "For Gods sake youre completely bloody paranoid" Robin had shouted "Sarah was banging on about Jacques Burgers bloody hair not Cormorans and all I said" "Not Cormorans" he had repeated in that moronic squeal As Robin rounded the corner into Denmark Street she felt as furious as she had eight hours ago when she had stormed out of the bedroom to sleep on the sofa Sarah Shadlock bloody Sarah Shadlock who had been at university with Matthew and had tried as hard as she could to win him away from Robin the girl left behind in Yorkshire… If Robin could have been sure she would never see Sarah again she would have rejoiced but Sarah would be at their wedding in July Sarah would doubtless continue to plague their married life and perhaps one day she would try to worm her way into Robins office to meet Strike if her interest was genuine and not merely a means of sowing discord between Robin and Matthew I will never introduce her to Cormoran thought Robin savagely as she approached the courier standing outside the door to the office He had a clipboard in one gloved hand and a long rectangular package in the other "Is that for Ellacott" Robin asked as she came within speaking distance She was expecting an order of ivory cardboard-covered disposable cameras which were to be favors at the wedding reception Her working hours had become so irregular of late that she found it easier to send online orders to the office rather than the flat The courier nodded and held out the clipboard without taking off his motorcycle helmet Robin signed and took the long package which was much heavier than she had expected; it felt as though some single large object slid inside it as she put it under her arm "Thank you" she said but the courier had already turned away and swung a leg over his motorbike She heard him ride away as she let herself inside the building Up the echoing metal staircase that wound around the broken birdcage lift she walked her heels clanging on the metal The glass door flashed as she unlocked and opened it and the engraved legend CB STRIKE PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR stood out darkly She had arrived deliberately early They were currently inundated with cases and she wanted to catch up with some paperwork before resuming her daily surveillance of a young Russian lap-dancer From the sound of heavy footfalls overhead she deduced that Strike was still upstairs in his flat Robin laid her oblong package on the desk took off her coat and hung it with her bag on a peg behind the door turned on the light filled and switched on the kettle then reached for the sharp letter-opener on her desk Remembering Matthews flat refusal to believe that it had been flanker Jacques Burgers curly mane she had been admiring rather than Strikes short and frankly pube-like hair she made an angry stab to the end of the package slit it open and pulled the box apart A womans severed leg had been crammed sideways in the box the toes of the foot bent back to fit Excerpted from Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith to be published Oct 20 Copyright 2015 by JK Rowling Reprinted with permission of Little Brown and Co, a division of Hachette Book Group Inc. Not in a million years did I think I would be writing this article. I can’t remember the last time I considered Lloyds Banking Group (LSE: LLOY) as a viable investment. It’s at least four years. Yet today I argue that the Lloyds share price is so low that it’s in the bargain bin.I damaged the Lloyds share priceI played a part in the collapse of Lloyds. I worked in the PPI (payment protection insurance) industry from 1991 to 2002. After leaving, I waged war on PPI from 2003 until the claims deadline on 29 August 2019.5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…I was a whistleblower, revealing in hundreds of articles, interviews and broadcasts how problematic PPI was. In 2006, the Office of Fair Trading referred the PPI market to the Competition Commission for investigation. I wrote a lengthy exposé to the Commission, earning me the industry nickname of “The guy who killed PPI”.In the UK’s biggest mis-selling scandal, Lloyds paid out £22bn in PPI compensation, out of a total exceeding £53bn. Ouch! It’s not easy being a bankThe PPI mis-selling scandal and the global financial crisis of 2008/09 that nearly killed Lloyds are ancient history. But the bank faces other difficulties that hurt the Lloyds share price and its profitability. For example, the old rule of retail banking was the ‘3:6:3 rule’. Pay savers 3% yearly interest, charge mortgage borrowers 6% a year and pay golf at 3pm. However, in this age of zero and negative interest rates, lending margins have been destroyed. No more 3% NIMs (net interest margins) for UK banks. Also, coronavirus losses will absolutely annihilate banking profits.Lloyds share price has performed terriblyAny idea how badly the Lloyds share price has done in recent years? Check out this lengthy litany of large losses:Six months: -50.4%One year: -44.9%Two years: -49.5%Three years: -53.8%Five years: -63.4%Owning Lloyds has been disastrous, with the share price halving or worse over four of these five periods. Six months ago, the Lloyds share price hit its 2019/20 high of 73.7p and crashed to a 12-month low of 27.1p on 14 May.Isn’t it time to buy Lloyds?I’ll get to the point: Lloyds has been a dog with fleas since 2007, but how low can it go? Every dog has its day and there must come a time when the Lloyds share price has its day in the sun. Without Covid-19, Lloyds could have enjoyed a wildly profitable 2020, but we’ll never know.I regard today’s Lloyds share price of 31.3p as an option on the bank’s future. There is no dividend and Coronavirus will wipe out earnings in 2020/21. Still, for the price of a packet of crisps, you gain part-ownership of a £22.6bn business.Lloyds is #1 in UK retail banking by a long, long way. It and a supportive Conservative government should make banking profitable again. Otherwise, we may as well all pack up and go home, because capitalism will be dead. The Lloyds share price is depressed today, but it won’t be forever. I’d buy.last_img
