The PA will work under the supervision ofan attending intensive care physician who is a member of theDivision of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Departmentof Medicine. Will also work collaboratively with resident andfellow physicians, Oncology Intensive Care Unit staff nurses,pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupationaltherapists, respiratory therapists, and Hematology/Oncologyconsultant physicians.The Physician Assistant willbe granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins HospitalMedical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and arereviewed annually.Duties andResponsibilities:Obtain history and performphysical examinations on newly admitted and follow-up Oncology ICUmechanical ventilation and other life support systems, and othertreatments as necessary.Participate in daily roundsto report progress of specific patients and help to develop careplans.Perform procedures such asarterial catheterization, central venous catheterization, andthoracentesis and will instruct residents in optimal performance ofthese procedures.Educate patients andfamilies regarding the nature of their clinical problems,prognoses, and options for continued care.Participate as a teacher andas a learner in educational activities in the Oncology IntensiveCare Unit and the Division of Pulmonary and Critical CareMedicine.MinimumQualifications:Bachelor’s degree; Certification by the NCCPA orsimilar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certifiedPhysician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State ofMaryland or other state where practicing. Experience may beconsidered in lieu of bachelor’s degree, as permitted by the JHUequivalency formula.Current CPR certification required. Mustmaintain current licensure and certification during duration ofemployment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is requiredprior to start date.JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits(semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute forone year of experience. Additional related experience maysubstitute for required education on the samebasis.PreferredQualifications:In inpatient critical careexperiencePrior experience withoncology or bone marrow transplant patients is preferred, but notessential.Additional Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities:Ability to incorporate intopractice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills withpatients, families, and interdisciplinary health care teammembers.Analytical abilities arenecessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plansof action for long and short term management of acute and chronichealth.Advanced interpersonalskills are necessary to communicate effectively with all members ofthe interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration andproblem-solving.Excellent organizationalskills and the ability to handle multiple taskssimultaneously.Excellent communicationskills, both verbal and written, are necessary to provideinformation to patients and health carepersonnel.Ability to attend toinformation presented one-on-one and during staffmeetings.Able to function effectivelyin a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changingenvironment.Ability to work well as amember of a health care team with a high degree ofself-motivation.General computer knowledgeand ability to use computerized medical informationsystemsPhysicalRequirements:Sitting, standing andwalking for extended period.
